Giclée is a French word which means “squirt” or “spurt”.

Giclée printing is a relatively new printing process which in the last few years, has become highly regarded by many of the world’s most important fine artists, collectors, galleries and museums. It combines new digital technologies with traditional print making techniques which provides the artist with creative possibilities that were never before available.

Unlike other fine art prints, a Giclée is normally produced one at a time on an as-needed basis. Each print being exactly like the first. Now artists with fresh ideas can afford to express themselves more readily without printing and paying for an entire edition up front as in the case of Serigraphy.

The Giclée digital printmaking is a growing medium. Many artists agree that "Giclée prints compare to Serigraphs and that it is no longer a question of which is better." Each is simply a different art form – each with its own advantage.

Graphical software and computing not only offers new techniques for combining and manipulating images, and for speedily turning creative ideas into prints, but also enables printmakers to access and utilize many different sources to create contemporary large format or standard paintings. The computer enables traditional media to be integrated with new kinds of ideas and imagery, potentially dissolving the boundaries between printmaking and other forms of artistic and scientific expression. The TruGiclée trademark is a niche market application used by Giclée master printers who serve the upper end of the digital fine art market. This trademark was created out of the necessity for quality in an industry without standards. Many artists, publishers, and consumers have faced disappointments in the form of cracking, fading, color banding, discoloration, poor color management, incorrect substrate choices, and many other problems. The TruGiclée logo guarantees consumers the highest standard of quality and the greatest longevity.
The TruGiclée standard is only recommended for those printers who are in the upper end of the fine art market. This market is characterized by discerning customers who have both the need to exactly match the original with each print, and to accommodate a collector's need for longevity. TruGiclée prints have higher price points because the materials and equipment used to make them have higher costs. TruGiclée members must have the capabilities to complete the entire printing process in-house, from scanning to coating
